BEST mobility of Francesco Nigro (PhD)

From University of Salerno to Arizona State University

2024/06/28

Mr. Francesco Nigro, PhD student at University of Salerno visited the Arizona State University campus in Tempe (Phoenix, AZ). His visit was hosted by Prof. Barzin Mobasher, from the “School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment”, from November 7th 2023, to February 14th 2024.

During his experience, he had the opportunity to apply a bio-inspired optimization procedure, based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA), aimed at minimizing the economical and ecological cost of seismic upgrading interventions for existing reinforced concrete structures, thus reducing the material consumption. The ASU High Performance Computing facility was really beneficial for his research, thanks to discussions with some scientists and experts in the field.

He was also invited to visit the National Center of Excellence on SMART (Sustainable Materials and Renewable Technologies) Innovations for Urban Climate and Energy, a premier laboratory for developing materials that contribute to a sustainable urban environment, housed in Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building II.
