Thermische Analysen oder praktische Optimierung eines thermischen Energiespeicher-Schaums (TESS)

Themen zur Weiterentwicklung eines innovativen Dämmstoffs mit thermischer Speicherfunktion

Bachelor thesis, Master thesis

At WiB, there is currently a strong research demand in several areas related to the further development of an innovative insulation material based on mineral raw materials. The material under investigation is a Thermal Energy Storage System (TESS), a highly porous cement-based insulation material with integrated thermal storage functionality. Due to its multifunctional properties, the material can be applied in façade elements, perimeter insulation, and cavity insulation systems.

Over the past years, numerous research projects have been successfully completed at WiB. Long-term prototypes are currently being analyzed in order to further improve both material performance and building-physical properties.

Available Topics for Bachelor’s and Master’s Theses

Topic 1: Optimization of the mix design with regard to foam structure and stability

The objective of this thesis is the experimental further development of the material through the production and evaluation of different specimen series. The focus lies on optimizing the foam structure and improving mechanical properties, particularly compressive strength. In addition, the regulation and reduction of shrinkage behavior will be investigated. The work includes practical laboratory work as well as the evaluation of mechanical parameters.

Topic 2: Thermal analysis of phase change materials in thermal energy storage foam

This topic focuses on the thermal and building-physical characterization of phase change materials (PCM) integrated into the TESS. Experimental work will be carried out in the micro-laboratory and includes the determination of thermal conductivity, heat capacity, density, and porosity. Furthermore, a simulated day–night cycle will be conducted to analyze the thermal storage behavior. Another key aspect is the investigation of the influence of PCM integration on the foam structure and the optimization of the integration process.

The scope and depth of both topics can be adapted individually and adjusted to either a Bachelor’s or a Master’s thesis upon agreement.
