Prof. Koenders studied Civil Engineering and Offshore Technology at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and obtained his PhD in 1997 in the field of numerical modeling and shrinkage of high-strength concrete at the Faculty of Civil Engineering. He then worked for five years as a project and innovation manager in a large offshore and construction company in the Netherlands.

From 2003 he was employed at Delft University of Technology as a research associate and led many research projects, including spalling of concretes due to fire exposure, durability of infrastructure, modeling of the hydration process of sustainable cement systems and development of models to calculate the mechanical properties of concretes with recycled aggregates.

From 2011 to 2014, Mr. Koenders was a Visiting Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) at the NUMATS Center for Sustainable and Durable Materials Development for Construction.

Since 2014, he has been Professor at the Institute of Construction and Building Materials in Civil Engineering at TU Darmstadt.
