A major limitation that has hindered the exploration of scenarios with enhanced sustainability is the reliance of LCA practitioners on inflexible, non-detailed, incomplete, and generic databases used for LCI modelling and later on to calculate environmental and economic impacts.

In this paper, Agustin Laveglia research assistant at WiB and joint PhD student (TU Darmstadt – Prof. Koenders and Ghent University – Prof. De Belie) introduces a process-oriented methodology (POM) to calculate a parametric LCI. This novel approach empowers LCA practitioners to calculate methodologically sound, scientific and well-grounded LCIs.

POM is used to calculate the LCI of a combined decarbonization strategy for the lime industry: circular economy, carbon direct avoidance and smart carbon capture and separation technologies.
