1st Modelling Group Meeting Recap (24 & 28 Jan. 2025)

Key discussions and Future steps

2025/02/12

The 1st Modeling Group Meeting took place on January 24 and 28, 2025, bringing together researchers to shape the next steps in refining modeling methodologies for cementitious systems. Stay tuned for further updates!

The sessions focused on various modeling approaches, material systems, and thermodynamic simulations.

January 24: General Modeling Strategies

The first session focused on structuring modeling efforts by categorizing projects based on:

  • Processes – Carbonation, Hydration, and Alkali Activation
  • Material Systems – Various binder compositions
  • Modeling Approaches – Chemical Thermodynamics and Reaction Kinetics

Plenary presentations highlighted key modeling techniques for cement hydration and carbonation. A key takeaway from the session was the selection of benchmarking models for hydration and carbonation case studies.

January 28: High-Temperature Thermodynamic Modeling

The second session focused on high-temperature applications, particularly thermodynamic modeling using FactSage.

Key discussions included:

  • FactSage demonstration – Theoretical background, cement clinker simulations, and experimental validation
  • Project presentations – High-temperature modeling approaches across different research projects

The group identified the need for standardized benchmarking models and databases to enhance accuracy in high-temperature thermodynamic simulations. Moving forward, efforts will be directed toward selecting case studies for further validation.

Stay tuned for upcoming developments!
